The 2nd Brazil–Japan Floating Offshore Wind R&D Workshop Held at YNU

On August 6, 2026, Yokohama National University (YNU), in collaboration with JBenergy, hosted the 2nd Brazil–Japan Floating Offshore Wind R&D Workshop.

Held under the theme “Introducing the Aura Sul Wind Project at YNU: Building New Research Partnerships,” the workshop introduced the Aura Sul Wind Project, a floating offshore wind initiative planned in Brazil, and explored opportunities for future research collaboration.

Prof. Rodolfo Gonçalves of JBenergy and the University of Tokyo presented an overview of the Aura Sul Wind Project and its planned demonstration activities. Three YNU faculty members from the Blue Economy & Ocean Innovation Lab—Prof. Motohiko Murai, Prof. Chikako Fujiyama, and Prof. Takayuki Suzuki—also gave presentations on SORIC and its research and development capabilities in floating offshore wind technology. Their presentations covered mooring systems, concrete floating structures, and flow fields around offshore wind turbine monopile structures.

Following the presentations, participants exchanged views on technical challenges, potential coordination, and research cooperation toward the planned demonstration activities of the Aura Sul Wind Project.

The workshop provided a valuable opportunity to connect universities, research institutions, and industry in Japan and Brazil and to foster new research partnerships in the field of floating offshore wind energy.

SORIC will continue to promote international collaboration with universities, research institutions, and industry worldwide, contributing to the advancement of research and education in the shipbuilding and ocean engineering fields.
